As the colder months finally come to an end – Melbourne starts to plan all the fun and excitement of the spring and summer event season. And it wouldn’t be a spring without the ultimate outdoor live music – Lost Picnic!
On Sunday October 7th it will be all about the picnic rugs, baskets, family fun and great music.
Lost Picnic is collaborating with some of Australia’s finest chefs, restaurants and providores to deliver the festival food, tailored to each city to showcase the best local operators.
The likes of The Dolphin, Rocker and Milky Lane in Sydney and Pho Nom and Burn City Smokers in Melbourne will be serving up a wonderful selection of picnic-perfect fare to share on a blanket with a bottle of wine. This year, guests will also be able to bring in their own picnic snacks and there will be an extended bar to ensure speed of service.
I sat down with Lost Picnic founder Simon Beckingham to talk all things food, entertainment and what this year’s event has in store …
You must be so excited for this event – how did the idea come together?
We can’t wait!
The idea was born back in 2014 from a desire to create an event that combines the two things I love the most – food and music. We thought a picnic was the perfect way to bring this to life and create an entirely new event experience in Sydney.
Lost Picnic is all about celebrating great Australia talent, eating amazing local food and dancing care-free on the grass. We’re so excited to make our debut in Melbourne this October.
Please tell us about the amazing artists we will be seeing on the day?
We’re really proud of our Antipodean line-up, it demonstrates what amazing talent we have coming out of our country. The incredible Tash Sultana will be headlining, fresh from the release of her highly anticipated debut album and new single Salvation.
It will be the last chance for fans in Melbourne to see her perform this year!
She’ll be joined by the deep and soulful, Meg Mac, intensely arresting Kiwi singer-songwriter, Marlon Williams, the captivating and melodic Odette, genre-colliding quintet Big Words (Melbourne Only) and energetic ten-piece brass outfit Hot Potato Band.
Then of course, there are plenty of roving entertainment and performances to keep you entertained throughout sets.
It wouldn’t be a picnic event without some amazing food trucks – what are the foodie highlights we can look forward to?
Working with our partners, Untitled Group in Melbourne, we have pulled together Melbourne’s finest restaurant and food vendors. You can choose from array of pop up restaurants, food trucks and hampers from the likes of Caravan of Caviar, Annam, French Saloon, Pho Nom, Beatbox Kitchen, Naughty Frenchy and St Gerry’s – all serving up picnic-perfect fare to a backdrop of Australia’s best music talent.
I absolutely love the hampers you have created – who have you collaborated with to create each one?
Thank you! We’d love our picnicners to spend the whole day on a rug, soaking up the music. We have collaborated with French Saloon, Kirks Wine Bar, Annam and The Pantry to create four hampers available for pre-order at $49.
- French Saloon: Seafood, salads and sweets from The French Saloon with a Yarra Valley salmon caviar, potted Ora King salmon rillettes, a prawn cocktail with marie rose dressing and iceberg lettuce and a vanilla scented ricotta with berry compote.
- Kirks Wine Bar: Meats and cheese form Kirk’s Wine Bar whose hamper will include That’s Amore burrata, Fiore di burrata with truffled honey, spicy chorizo and sheep’s milk cheese with sherry glazed figs.
- Annam: A French-Vietnamese hamper from Pho Nom chef Jerry Mai. Dishes such as the pork terrine, Vietnamese coffee crème caramel, Laughing Cow cheese, cognac pate and baguettes pay homage to the French legacy of Vietnamese cooking.
- The Pantry: Hiro Sushi Bar will be serving Japanese tasters in the form of Panko crumbed Katsu dinner rolls, Miso salmon poke bowls, soba noodle salads and crème brûlée.
