Sofitel Melbourne On Collins and Dulux® have come together to celebrate Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.
The two industry giants have collaborated on an Asian infused High Tea buffet where guests are invited to paint chocolate Terracotta Warriors back to their original colours.
The afternoon is truly divine with a buffet selection of warm savoury delights, gourmet sandwiches, and desserts that are as just as delicious as they are as visually beautiful. Set at Sofitel’s prestigious Sofi’s Lounge, guests can sit back, relax and enjoy the most spectacular day.
I sat down with the team at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins to find out all about the collaboration and what guests can expect for the upcoming events calendar …
The Terracotta High tea is such a special experience – how did the collaboration with the exhibit and the NGV come to fruition?
Terracotta Warriors High Tea was inspired by the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) newly opened Melbourne dual Winter Masterpieces exhibition, Terracotta Warriors and Cai Guo-Qiang.
Sofitel’s Executive Pastry Chef David Hann created ‘Terracotta Warriors High Tea’ menu based on the theme of the exhibition celebrating Chinese culture and art, both past & present with classic ingredients mixing with contemporary methods.
The marketing team also assisted in the creation of the concept by researching the Terracotta Warriors and found that the warriors were actually painted with colours however they have since faded or peeled off. The team then approached fellow NGV sponsorship partner and Australia’s best paint brand, Dulux with the concept of painting chocolate warrior replicas with colour-matched Dulux colours.
Sofitel’s General Manager, Clive Scott mentions, ‘This new high tea concept is quite unique, bridging the Chinese culture of the past with the artistic flair of our very talented international pastry chef, David Hann and marketing team’.
What are some of the highlights guests can expect?
High tea gastronomes can embrace their inner artist by painting their very own mini Terracotta warriors back to its original colour with Dulux edible paint.
The high tea also includes a full buffet of themed desserts and savouries such as red bean curd and white chocolate bombes, strawberry and yuzu tartlets, black sesame and matcha macarons, finger sandwiches, scones and a glass of sparkling wine on arrival

What makes this different from other High Teas?
As the hotel for the Arts, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins has always brought an artistic flair to our high teas. Our team of Chefs enjoy stepping outside the traditional high teas in Melbourne to create inspiring and playful experiences for our guests which is seen through the Monochromatic high tea on the weekdays to Terracotta Warriors High Tea on weekends.
Our high teas still come with Sofi’s traditional scones with clotted cream and house made jams.
What are some of the other exciting events coming up at Sofitel?
As we head into the spring racing carnival, our guests can look forward to Sofitel Girl’s Day Out at the Flemington Racecourse.
